The 1950s school house is set in a couple of acres of treed lawns and paddocks in the Hinekura valley. The Pahaoa River runs along the property and there are some good swimming holes to be recommended. It's a 20 minute drive to the coast at Pahaoa where you can walk or fish at the river mouth. A bike ride to the coast following the river is a great way to spend an hour or two.
PLEASE NOTE: the road from Martinborough to Hinekura is closed due to road subsidence. The alternate road is via the Admiral Hill Rd off the Longbush Road. From Wellington this adds an extra 50 minutes to an hour to the trip. This road is gravel in parts and care is needed on some sections.
If this doesn't put you off, there are vineyards, golf courses and cafes from Martinborough through to Masterton if you are wanting a break from the countryside.
If you don't want to venture too far afield, you may prefer just to relax under a tree with a good book.
In summer you can light up the barbecue (gas bottle is in the garage next to the small gate and key for this is attached to the barbecue). On a clear night sit back and enjoy the star-lit sky.
If it turns chilly you can light the fire indoors.
