The gardens are surrounded by rolling hills and are a short stroll to the bank-side of the meandering river Dove, where you can walk over the renowned Viator bridge, contained within Izaak Walton’s famous book ‘The Complete Angler’. A stunning walk takes you to the picture-postcard Dovedale stepping stones, drawing tourists from all over the world. Indeed there are an abundance of outstanding walks around Dovedale. For the cycling enthusiast you can access the Tissington Trail from Alsop, just a mile away. The trail is popular and free from traffic, running along a disused railway line through stunning countryside. Other access points include Parsley Hay, benefitting from a visitor centre and cycle hire, Hartington, Tissington, Thorpe and Ashbourne.
There is fresh water fishing within Dovedale and the wider Peak District, notable for rainbow trout, wild brown trout and grayling. Carsington reservoir is close by for sailing enthusiasts and trying out other water sports.

Another must-see attraction is Haddon Hall, 900 years old and described by Simon Jenkins as ‘the most perfect house to survive from the middle ages’.
